Questions about Mentoring
What types of papers do you read and review?
I prefer to comment on non-fiction papers for elementary, middle, and high school students. If you need a mentor for a fiction piece, I have one to recommend!
What if the paper is 2-1/4 pages? Can I pay for 2 pages?
If you prefer to pay for two pages rather than three, your student will have a valuable revision experience before I even see the paper. S/he will be compelled to cut precious (or not so precious) words until the paper is two pages. What remains will likely be stronger. If your child chooses not to cut words, then, yes, you will need to pay for three pages.
How would you like the paper to look?
Please use one-inch margins and 12-point, traditional font (i.e. Times New Roman or an equivalent) with double-spacing. The heading should look like this:
Student's name
Date
Class (if applicable)
Assignment Title
Title of Piece
What information would you like me to include with the paper?
If the paper you are sending is a teacher's assignment, it would be helpful to read a description of the assignment. If you want me to look for anything in particular (i.e. organization, support of the thesis statement, punctuation), please let me know that as well.
Will you grade my child's writing?
Since grading gives me hives, I prefer not to assign grades. If you really want your child's paper to be evaluated, send a request. There will be an additional charge to cover the cost of my medicine. ; )
How much time do you need to review my child's paper?
While I will do my best to return your child’s paper within hours, please factor two days into your schedule, allowing time for sickness or an abnormally hectic schedule. If you want to check my availability before sending the paper, use the "Contact Me" form.
What are your credentials?
After graduating from college with a B. A. in English Education, I taught writing and literature for four years in an eighth grade classroom. Since then I have taught/tutored homeschooled elementary, middle, and high school students, including my own children who are now 17, 15, and 13. I have reviewed many papers. I currently work as a copy-editor for seminary students.
